In this self portrait photography project, I explore how controlled light can shape emotion and atmosphere. Using flash, color, and projection as sculptural tools. 20.04.2024 by Sabine Fischer
This self-portrait was created by filling the background with yellow light produced by a flash fitted with a yellow color gel. The light spreads evenly across the entire backdrop, giving the image an intense and immersive atmosphere.
In addition, I projected an abstract blue color video onto my skin using a projector, adding a surreal, painterly sense of movement to the portrait.
The interplay of light, motion, and projection creates a layered visual composition that invites the viewer to explore its different elements and engage with the deeper dimensions of the image.
The photograph was inspired by the techniques of Nick Fancher, who often uses the “shutter drag” method in his portraits. Recreating this technique in a self-portrait setting is nearly impossible, so I experimented with alternative approaches to introduce movement into the frame.
Through these alternative techniques, movement becomes less about blur and more about perception: A subtle tension between stillness and instability that mirrors the internal state behind the image.

I’m a self portrait, photo artist & graphic designer living in Germany. Since 2008, I’ve been exploring creative ways to bring various photographic ideas to life through self-portraits and artistic portraits. My work evolves through material experimentation: light, smoke, surfaces, pigment, projection, water, shadows and light, effects using projectors, fog machines, wind machines, smoke and the manipulation of various surfaces using oil, gel, water, and different types of paint.
My self-portraits are an expression of my inner world. I process my experiences and ideas and dreams and release them into something new. Each of my images is carefully crafted, requiring several hours of shooting and post-processing. Since I primarily create self-portraits, it requires a lot of effort and creativity to bring the ideas to life.
